According to the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, the "St. Petersburg Initiative" for 4 years of its existence has established itself as an effective international platform for public-private partnership aimed at discussing and resolving pressing environmental issues, both in the Baltic Sea region and beyond.
The first International Conference on “Green financing” in frames of the “St. Petersburg Initiative” will be held on May 18th, 2017 at premises of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.

During the event, it is planned to present the experience of developing and applying "green" financing to provide a favorable environment, financial instruments that could be used to stimulate the introduction of the best available technologies (BAT) and the implementation of projects in the field of waste management in the Russian Federation.

First in 2015 plenary session of the St. Petersburg initiative, continued a series of events dedicated to environmental issues in the Baltic region. At the same time, Spbi as an international platform for public-private partnership goes beyond purely regional associations, expanding its geographic reach and engage new regions. The event reaffirmed its international status, gathering together representatives of the Baltic region, as well as participants from Kaliningrad, Novgorod regions, Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The upcoming meeting will focus on the environmental problems of the urban areas with an accent on "smart cities" concept., and on environmental education and outreach. During the meeting, participants noted that shall make all possible efforts to improve the environmental situation in the region of the Gulf of Finland. The main tasks for this purpose are: modernization of treatment facilities and the termination of the discharge of untreated sewage into the water bodies in the catchment area of the Gulf of Finland; gradual reduction of income of harmful substances into the marine environment; monitoring of the marine environment with the use of new technologies, installation of special equipment on board ships; marine spatial planning; combating oil spills; the creation of protected areas in the waters of the Gulf of Finland.

The next plenary meeting featuring members of the Steering Committee and the Board of partners of the Initiative will convene on March, 11, 2014. The meeting will address the issues of implementation of the project approved at the November, 2013 Moscow meeting, main priorities for 2014 and follow up cooperation development in frames of the Initiative, including preparations for an International green shipping conference (April, 2014, Moscow). Besides, at the close of the official part a site visit to the SUE “Vodokanal of St. Petersburg” objects is planned.

The first day of Baltic Sea Forum in St. Petersburg made it clear that ecological state of the Baltic Sea ranks high in the political agenda of participating countries. High ecological standards are seen as smart economics. The Baltic Sea Action Summit process, started in Helsinki 2010, was praised for its concrete approach and the Baltic Sea Forum in St. Petersburg was thanked as a timely continuation of the process.

The Baltic Sea does well. It is a healthy, well-balanced ecosystem. It does not anymore suffer from eutrophication. It’s not damaged by chemicals. The risk of oil accident is minimal, and the sediments are full of life again.
